Persuasion Techniques | Top 3 Influence and Persuasion Tools

After reading 10 books and over 100 articles on this subject I have come up with a list for myself on the top 3 persuasion techniques I can use while running my consulting firm and training program. Here they are in order:

  • Reciprocation - Give away as much value as possible to your website visitors or seminar attendees. Move the "line of free" by giving away 3x as much valuable content and advice than anyone else. This positions you as the expert, creates goodwill, word of mouth marketing and instills a sense of debt upon those using the free resources.
  • Environment Modification - Modify it to help you meet your goals. Changing the environment is the #1 quickest way to change anyone's behavior and expectations during a presentation, negotiation or sale.
  • Liking - Become genuine friends with the person you are speaking with. Learn about their background and find 3 things that you have in common with them. Don't stop asking about them until you have found 3 things and understand how they tick. Through this approach you will appear "like them" and that is who they are going to want to do business with.
These are not earth-shattering discoveries of my own but rather the best tools I have found which can be easily applied to any situation. I've read about dozens or possibly 100 tactics but these are the 3 which have worked the most consistently for me.
